Are you dreaming of the sheer bliss experienced by waking up to the warming caress of the Florida sun?

On my spring 2024 stay at Waterfront Cabanas in Key Largo, I spent each morning leisurely sprawled out on the deck, sipping coffee, my feet playfully dangling over the edge, skimming the glassy surface of the salt-kissed canal, watching my husband paddle board. It already started to feel like we were residents in this quiet neighborhood.

Our cabana offered all of the comforts of home with a full-size kitchen, king-sized bed and tiled shower, all recently renovated in a contemporary beach house style. Several restaurants are within walking distance, offering fresh catch daily.

Staying at the Waterfront Cabanas in Key Largo is experiencing Florida like a local.

Guests at Waterfront Cabanas can settle into their own private oasis on the edge of a canal feeding into the Atlantic Ocean. Watch the boats cruise by or join them with your kayak or paddle board.

Designed to embrace the casual elegance of the Florida Keys, these cozy hideaways provide an atmosphere that’s both intimate and inviting. The cabanas feature airy, open-plan spaces.

Rooms are decorated predominately in white shades with vibrant blue and natural wood accents. The king-sized beds are swaddled in soft duvet covers and plump pillows and the bathroom is stocked with plush towels and luxurious bath products, giving it a spa-like feel.

Just outside your back door, find a private patio overlooking the canal. This is the perfect place to sip your morning coffee and watch the fishing boats heading out for the day.

Each cabana offers everything you need to prepare a hot breakfast to fuel your day or a light dinner after a day of joyful exploration. Barbeque grills are available for guest use on the back deck.

Step out of your cabana and into a world rife with outdoor activities. If you’re a diver or looking to become one, Key Largo’s clear waters are home to the first underwater park in the United States, the stunning John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.

Explore the vivid coral reefs on a diving or snorkeling expedition. We did the half-day snorkel trip to Molasses Reef and the Christ of the Abyss statue. Be sure to check their website for details and reservations.

You can also snorkel off Cannon Beach in the park, where you’ll find a fascinating Spanish shipwreck about 100 yards offshore.

Prefer to stay above water? You can kayak or paddle board through the 2.5 miles of mangroves at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Equipment rentals are available at the park and this option provides both exercise and the opportunity to spot local wildlife.

Interested in something less strenuous? Then hop aboard a glass bottom boat at the park for a view of the undersea world without getting wet. Outside of the park, visitors can take a canal tour aboard the actual African Queen for a unique perspective of the coral reefs and marine life.

For an unforgettable romantic adventure, take a sunset cruise, sailing along the warm waters as the sun paints the sky in shades of fiery oranges and pinks.

And for those who find peace with a rod and reel in hand, fishing in Key Largo is exceptional. Tarpon, bonefish, and blackfin tuna await.

Visitors can also explore Everglades National Park. Captain Sterling’s Everglades Tours offers daily excursions into this impressive UNESCO World Heritage Site. Keep an eye out for the iconic American alligator, as well as an abundance of bird species found here, including the majestic great blue heron and the colorful roseate spoonbill.

Savor the Local Flavors

After a day spent submerged in the Keys’ aquatic wonders or basking in the sun on your private deck, you’re bound to have worked up an appetite. Fortunately, Key Largo doesn’t just cater to the spirit of adventure, but also to the food lover. Just moments from your waterfront cabana, you can indulge in the succulent local seafood and tropical flavors that define the Florida Keys cuisine.

At the end of the canal, you’ll find a working marina and home to Key Largo Fisheries and the Pilot House Restaurant. Their seafood is as fresh as it gets and it’s no wonder they’ve earned their reputation for excellence throughout the years.

If you’re looking for the iconic Key Lime Pie, stop in at Mrs. Mac’s, where their renowned Key Lime Pie is one of the best in the Keys. Breakfast is equally outstanding.

Let me say that the sunsets in Key Largo are spectacular and sunset viewing is a major event. It involves sipping a cocktail and watching the sun sink slowly before disappearing into the bay as the colors morph from yellows and oranges to deep reds and indigos.

Be sure to check outBayside Grill and Sunset Bar for creative libations while witnessing a gorgeous sunset complete with the blowing of a conch shell.

Another option is  Sundowners, wherecocktail hour and sunset viewing on the patio rolls right into a delicious dinner experience. Don’t miss their Shrimp-Cargot. It’s amazing.

If you’re hungry for Italian, you can savor the authentic Italian flavors at the locally owned Italian Food Company.

Nightcaps by the Water

As the evening closes in, the soothing lull of the water calls you back to your waterfront abode. Relax on your canal side deck perhaps with another tropical drink in hand as the stars begin to twinkle above.

This is the moment where the enchantment of Key Largo really sinks in. The warm night air, the soft glow of lights from your cabana, and the silhouette of palm trees against the night sky create an atmosphere unmatched by any other.

The Waterfront Cabana experience in Key Largo is about immersion. You’re not just visiting, you’re part of the laid-back, flip-flop-wearing, sun-soaked vibe that is the Florida Keys.
