Basecamp Suites in Canmore, Alberta is the perfect getaway spot for hikers. This comfortable and cozy hotel is located in the heart of the mountain town, on 10th Street, within walking distance of many entertainment and dining options.

The rooms at Basecamp Suites are designed for the traveler who wants to feel like they have a home away from home. Each suite is complete with a full kitchen, bathroom, and separate bedroom for convenience and privacy. You’ll feel like a local living in charming Canmore surrounded by the vast beauty of the Canadian Rockies when staying at this property.

Getting To Basecamp Suites from Calgary

Canmore is just one hour (approximately 100 kilometers) from Calgary by car, making it an easily accessible place to stay when flying into Calgary International Airport (YYC). From the airport, you can pick up a rental car and drive to Canmore or book the Banff Airporter shuttle which stops in Canmore.

I recommend renting a car if possible for the convenience of being able to drive wherever you want in the area. Plus, guests staying at Basecamp Suites can park onsite in a designated spot associated with their suite. Be sure to verify at the time of booking that your suite comes with a parking spot as not all of them do.

A stay at Basecamp Suites can be a short stop on a greater road trip of the Canadian Rockies or it can be a week-long experience that allows you to settle in one spot. Whatever the case, the modern conveniences and comforts of the suites make it easy to regroup after a busy day of outdoor adventure and exploration.

Basecamp Suites in Canmore offers four different room types, all featuring full kitchens. These range from one-to-three-bedroom apartments and three-bedroom plus bunk accommodations. Kitchen: The apartments at Basecamp Suites are perfect for hikers staying in Canmore for a week or longer due to the fully equipped kitchen available for cooking healthy meals each night and the ease of preparing packed lunches for the trail the next day.

Washing Machine: Bathrooms feature a stacked washer and dryer. One detergent pod is provided by Basecamp Suites and you’re welcome to bring more just in case.

Virtual Self-Check-In Process: For hikers arriving and departing at odd hours because they’re chasing sunrise or sunset on the trail, the virtual check-in and check-out process at Basecamp Suites is a huge win.

You can easily complete your check-in online 24 hours before your stay and you’ll receive a key code via email that you simply punch in on the room’s keypad upon arrival. All of the information you need for a comfortable visit is included in the welcome email for a completely virtual and contactless process that allows you to have flexibility and freedom in your exploration of Canmore and Kananaskis Country.

Rooftop Hot Tub: Saving the best for last, one of the top reasons hikers love staying at Basecamp Suites is the incredible rooftop hot tub. This dreamy amenity provides epic mountain views of the Canadian Rockies.

While you soak in the warm waters in a blissful state, you’ll appreciate how the soothing heat relaxes your muscles after a long day of hiking on the trail. This was a highlight of my entire trip to the Canadian Rockies and just by itself is the perfect reason for hikers to stay at Basecamp Suites in Canmore.

Best Hikes Near Canmore

Kananaskis Country is home to some of Canada’s most awe-inspiring scenery and best hiking trails. All of the trails in this region are stunning, with some closer to Canmore and others about an hour’s drive down a winding dirt road. Here are two of my favorite hikes in Kananaskis Country.

Of special note: Hikers should always carry bear spray and know how to use it as they are hiking in bear country.

Grassi Lakes

This moderate hike in Kananaskis Country is just minutes from Canmore. It’s a great option for beginner to intermediate hikers who want to witness the beauty of the Rockies and alpine lakes on a short yet rewarding route. The minimal elevation gain also makes it a good choice for families hiking with kids.

For the avid hiker looking for a challenge, Smutwood Peak is the perfect trail. It takes about an hour to drive to the trailhead from Canmore, making it more remote and less busy than many other routes in the area. Hikers will traverse on flat ground for the first six kilometers before embarking on a steep uphill trek to the peak. Trekking poles are a necessity on this route because the steep descent is just as challenging as the climb. Those who make it to the peak are treated to some of the most incredible views in the country.

Distance: 17.9 km

Elevation Gain: 929 meters

Trail Type: Out-and-back

Dog-Friendly: Yes

Difficulty: Hard

After a long day on the trails, it’s essential to indulge in some of Canmore’s best food. Just steps from Basecamp Suites, you’ll find some of the best choices in downtown Canmore.

Start the day off strong with fresh bagels and a huge selection of cream cheeses at Canmore’s Rocky Mountain Bagel Co. right on downtown Main Street. Sitting on the patio allows you to enjoy breakfast with stunning mountain views.

Lunch: The Wood

Have a hearty lunch near Basecamp Suites at The Wood. This cozy restaurant on 8th Street offers a rustic atmosphere with friendly waitstaff and delicious food. Try the nachos or the Korean Fried Chicken Sandwich and pair it with a local craft beer.

Dinner: Rhythm and Howl

Just a short drive from Basecamp Suites, you’ll find one of Canmore’s newest and best restaurants, Rhythm and Howl. Located inside the MTN House by Basecamp, Rhythm and Howl first opened its doors in mid-September 2023 serving up elegant cuisine with local ingredients. Both the Hanger Steak and the Ling Cod were phenomenal.

But start with the Turkish Flatbread for an unforgettable meal in the Canadian Rockies.
