Tucked away in the serene landscape of Port Allegany, PA, the captivating Usonian Cottage at Lynn Hall is an architectural gem that seamlessly weaves together innovation, history, and charm, making it a must-see for architecture enthusiasts, travelers seeking unique experiences, and history buffs alike. This unique destination offers an unforgettable experience – a testament to Walter J. Hall’s architectural legacy – and is proudly listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

My husband and I had the privilege of spending a night in the Cottage at Lynn Hall in summer of 2024. We fell in love with the exceptional amenities and the stunning grounds of this vacation rental property.

History of Usonian Cottage

The Usonian Cottage at Lynn Hall is more than just a dwelling, it’s a piece of architectural history. Built in the 1930s by Ray Viner Hall and his father, Walter J. Hall, the primary builder for Fallingwater, the cottage is a prime example of the Usonian concept showcasing organic architecture that harmonizes with its natural surroundings.

Walter Hall’s influence is evident in every aspect of the Usonian Cottage. The cottage seamlessly blends into the hillside, from its horizontal lines that echo the landscape to its use of natural materials like stone and wood. These design elements were not merely for aesthetic appeal, but were intended to create a harmonious living environment.

The goal was to create a functional and beautiful place, and the Usonian Cottage perfectly embodies this philosophy.

One of the most appealing aspects of the Usonian Cottage is its thoughtful blend of historical authenticity and modern comforts. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a cozy, yet modern atmosphere paying homage to mid-century design. The cottage has comfortable furnishings, beautiful artwork, and attention to little details, offering a luxurious experience.

The cottage has lots of natural light through the many windows bringing the outdoors in. The interior is clad with oversized redwood shiplap siding and Walter Hall’s signature stonework. The design compresses the interior ceilings to pull the outdoors in.

The property has an open design and includes a living room, a full kitchen, two bedrooms with queen-sized beds, an entertainment room, and a bathroom with a walk-in shower. The cottage also has a patio with a bubbling fountain in the back and a patio for outdoor dining off the kitchen area.

Amenities

The fully equipped kitchen is a cook’s dream. Modern appliances are seamlessly integrated into the cottage’s original design. Imagine preparing a meal while surrounded by timeless beauty.

The living area, with its central fireplace and dramatic ship’s prow window, provides the perfect setting for relaxation. Curl up with a book and enjoy the breathtaking views of the valley.

The cottage also boasts a variety of amenities designed to enhance the visitor experience. Every detail has been considered to ensure a comfortable stay, from a state-of-the-art sound system to fresh fruit on the table.

Whether you’re looking to unwind with a movie or a good book or enjoy the tranquility of the surroundings, the Usonian Cottage offers the perfect retreat.

Though the residence is impressive, I loved the cottage grounds the most. Located on the Lynn Hall property, the grounds are as captivating as the architecture. The cottage is situated on a hillside offering dramatic views of the valley below.

The stone quarry-turned-wooded grotto is a hidden gem. It provides a peaceful escape where visitors can relax in a hammock, listen to the sounds of nature and the bubbling fountain, and soak in the natural beauty.

The landscape surrounding the cottage is meticulously maintained. Paths wind through the property, inviting visitors to explore the natural beauty and discover hidden nooks perfect for quiet contemplation. The cottage’s integration with its surroundings is a testament to Wright’s commitment to creating spaces that blend seamlessly with nature, ensuring a relaxing and peaceful experience for all visitors.

The grounds include an outdoor fireplace, a gas grill, an outdoor dining area and a rear courtyard with water features.

For those interested in photography, the property offers endless opportunities to capture stunning visuals and panoramic views. The interplay of light and shadow, the textures of stone and wood, and the vibrant colors of the landscape make it a photographer’s paradise.

Whether a seasoned professional or a casual hobbyist, you’ll find plenty of inspiration at the Usonian Cottage to fuel your creativity and passion for photography.
