In summer of 2024, I had the pleasure of staying at The Lodge at Gulf State Park, a coastal Alabama gem seamlessly blending luxury with eco-conscious travel. With its LEED certification, this stunning resort is not just a beachfront oasis, but also a testament to sustainable architecture. My husband’s and my favorite part of the stay was its location on the coastline of the Gulf of Mexico.

From the moment you step into the lobby, you will be greeted by a friendly and inviting atmosphere, as well as an eco-friendly design showcasing the beauty of the surrounding nature.

Our spacious rooms were thoughtfully designed to provide a tranquil retreat, offering breathtaking views of the Gulf. Whether you choose to relax on your private balcony or take a dip in the beachfront pool, natural beauty is never far away.

We indulged in locally sourced cuisine at the multiple onsite restaurants and borrowed bikes to explore the nearby nature trails. The Lodge at Gulf State Park is not just a place to stay, it’s an opportunity to immerse yourself in the beauty of coastal Alabama.

Balancing Luxury and Environmental Responsibility

For those who may not know the term, LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, It is a globally recognized green building certification program used to evaluate the environmental performance and sustainability of buildings. The LEED certification process involves a comprehensive assessment of a building’s design, construction and operations.

Based on the number of points earned, buildings can achieve one of four LEED certification levels: Certified, Silver, Gold or Platinum, with Platinum being the highest level of achievement. The Lodge at Gulf State Park is a Gold LEED Facility.

The rise of eco-friendly lodging has become a crucial aspect of the hospitality industry, aligning with the growing awareness and concern for the planet’s well-being. At The Lodge at Gulf State Park, 15% of all building materials were recycled materials and 70 to 75% of construction waste was recycled. The facility sports a 32% reduction in energy usage by design, and a 35% reduction in water usage compared to a typical facility.

Beyond the environmental benefits, eco-friendly hotels like the Lodge at Gulf State Park provide a an enriching experience for guests. This establishment has incorporated sustainable design elements, using locally sourced and organic products, and offers educational programs or activities that highlight the importance of environmental stewardship. This enhanced my overall experience left and me with a deeper appreciation for the natural world, inspiring me to adopt more sustainable practices in my daily life.

Eco-Friendly Amenities and Services

Water conservation is a key focus on property. The resort has implemented low-flow fixtures, such as shower heads and faucets to reduce water usage. Furthermore, the property’s landscaping features drought-tolerant native plants that require minimal irrigation, further contributing to the overall water efficiency of the resort.

In addition to the environmental benefits, eco-friendly hotels often provide a more enjoyable and enriching experience for their guests. The Lodge is part of a 7000-acre State Park with at least two educational or recreational activities per day, and up to five per day in the summer months. Guided bike or Segway tours, nature walks on the beach, and the “Beyond the Scenery, History of Gulf State Park Hike,” as well as lectures and art classes, all await guests of the Lodge and visitors to the State Park.

Another standout eco-friendly feature at The Lodge is the electric vehicle charging stations available for guests.

The Lodge also offers a fleet of complimentary bicycles for guests’ use, promoting a sustainable and healthy way to explore the local community. Another way the resort encourages guests to reduce their carbon footprint and enjoy the scenic coastal routes and nearby trails.

When it comes to dining, The Lodge’s five on-site restaurants showcase their commitment to sustainability. The menus feature locally sourced and seasonal ingredients, supporting the regional agricultural community and reducing the environmental impact of food transportation.

I was happy to see their menus included invasive fish species like the Lionfish, which is harvested from the Gulf and a major threat to native fish. Their Bycatch Seafood Program helps local fishermen sell their unintentional species by purchasing any bycatch to serve in restaurants. The on-site restaurants also work to minimize food waste through careful menu planning and the use of composting systems.

Bed and bath linens are soft, thick and delightfully comfortable. The public spaces are beautifully appointed with artworks and furniture reflecting the beach environment. There are welcoming places to sit and watch the ever-changing landscape of sea and sky while sipping on a cup of coffee or glass of wine.

The resort’s infinity pool, with its striking design and serene ambiance, offers a tranquil oasis for guests to unwind and rejuvenate. Surrounded by lush greenery and the soothing sound of the waves, the pool experience at The Lodge is truly a celebration of the natural world. Even though the resort offers a multitude of activities, I was drawn back to the pool and beach every day.

The culinary experience is equally impressive. My favorite was their vast breakfast buffet, loaded with locally grown fruits and vegetables, eggs to order and an array of meats. All this while enjoying panoramic views of the Gulf.
