The Red Lion Inn, a storied landmark in the heart of the Berkshires, debuted The Norman Rockwell Firehouse, a new guest experience paying homage to one of America’s most revered illustrators and painters, Norman Rockwell, in October of 2024. In partnership with The Norman Rockwell Museum, the adjacent Historic Firehouse on Elm Street has been transformed into an immersive tribute capturing the warmth and nostalgia reminiscent of Rockwell’s evocative depictions of American life.
“This isn’t just a suite with thematic decor,” Sarah Eustis, Founder & CEO of Main Street Hospitality, said. “It’s a journey into a pivotal moment in American history, where guests are surrounded by iconic, signed prints of Rockwell’s work. This experience invites travelers to live within the art and the era, offering something truly special and unlike anything else on the Red Lion Inn campus.”
Norman Rockwell, the iconic American artist, moved to Stockbridge, Massachusetts in 1953, where he lived until his passing in 1978. The charming New England town served as a significant source of inspiration for his work, including the famous painting “Stockbridge Main Street at Christmas,” which captures the essence of small-town life and features Red Lion’s Main Inn. Additionally, the inn’s historic turn-of-the-century firehouse was used by the town until the 1970s and is depicted in Rockwell’s painting “The New American LaFrance is Here,” celebrating local heritage.
Guests who reserve their stay in the newly reimagined Firehouse will be surrounded by decor and furnishings inspired by Norman Rockwell’s beloved artwork. Vintage touches, such as classic fire trucks, an art station offering drawing lessons, and a curated collection of books about Rockwell’s life, further enrich the experience. Gallery walls throughout the property will feature thoughtfully curated displays, while interactive art installations invite guests to actively engage with Rockwell’s artistic legacy.
“The goal here isn’t simply to observe but to engage with history,” Eustis said. “We want our guests not only to see what made Rockwell’s works so impactful but also feel it—to live it if only for a night or two.”
Dining experiences are an integral part of this unique offering, with meals inspired by scenes from Norman Rockwell’s iconic artworks. One such inspiration is ‘Freedom from Want,’ which beautifully captures a traditional Thanksgiving feast set in the very dining room of the Red Lion Inn. This enduring symbol of American prosperity, togetherness, and happiness is brought to life through a family-style Thanksgiving spread. The meal includes seasonal soup, salad, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and turkey. Guests wishing to enjoy this experience must book at least one week in advance.
Guests of The Norman Rockwell Firehouse at The Red Lion Inn will experience a taste of the rich culture of the area and a deeper understanding of the artist through tickets to the Norman Rockwell Museum which houses the world’s largest and most significant collection of Rockwell’s work. The Norman Rockwell Firehouse at The Red Lion Inn is an opportunity for guests to immerse themselves in nostalgic history and have a travel experience that will far outlast their stay.
