Sun-kissed beaches, a charming village, and a wealth of recreational opportunities abound in Carlsbad, CA, one of San Diego North County’s bedroom communities.

Known for its idyllic weather and stunning Pacific Ocean views, this coastal city offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and modern amenities. From the iconic Flower Fields that burst into a riot of colors each spring to the world-renowned Legoland California Resort, Carlsbad beckons visitors with a diverse array of attractions.

The inviting ambiance of its downtown area dotted with boutiques, cafes, and art galleries complements the city’s laid-back lifestyle, making it a sought-after destination for both residents and those seeking a tranquil escape along the California coastline.

Located directly across from the Pacific Ocean and only 150 steps to the surf and sand, Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach is a Hilton Resort & Spa property exuding a distinctive boutique feel with a classic Craftsman design.

The hotel sits atop the crest of a series of gently rolling berms offering spectacular views of picturesque South Carlsbad beaches. Its 215 guest rooms and suites offer a relaxed, luxurious beach style. Guests may choose between ocean view, pool view and standard view rooms, some with balconies, which I highly recommend.

After a long day of exploring the area, it’s nice to share a glass of wine toasting the sunset over the Pacific before heading out to dinner. Then return to your incredibly comfortable bed with soft, luxurious linens and fall asleep to the lull of ocean waves.

My husband and I selected a spacious king with an ocean-view lanai that was ideal for our stay. The room included an armchair ottoman, a work desk, and a bathroom with a granite countertop.

A sparkling outdoor pool and elevated spa are a favorite of guests. Open daily from 7 am to 11 pm, there’s nothing like seeing the Pacific Ocean sunset from a comfy pool lounger, drink in hand, or by a warming and welcoming firepit.

Guests can also reserve a private cabana for up to four guests or sink into a cushy daybed for two. Cabanas and daybeds can be rented on a first-come, first-served basis, though hotel guests receive a 10% discount as part of the resort fee.

Beach cruiser rentals are complimentary for 90-minute rides daily. For beach lovers, Cape Rey is happy to provide free beach packs with beach chairs, umbrellas, and towels. Of course, due to the hotel’s prime location, guests merely have to cross the street to get their toes in the sand.

A 24-hour fitness center is located on-site, and of course, you’ll be working out with a spectacular view.

Local shuttle service within a five-mile radius is available at no charge to those wanting to get out to explore the local area.

Resort guests also receive a 15% discount at the hotel’s Ocean Crest Spa on services of 50 minutes or more, as well as 20% off E-bike rentals.

Premium coffee is served in the lobby each morning and two reusable water bottles for use at refill stations and to take home are included in the room.

I will fully admit that typically, I am not a fan of huge hotel restaurants unless I arrive late and tired and there’s no other choice. Chandler’s Oceanfront Dining restaurant, however, is a whole different story. It’s no wonder the restaurant received the Open Table Diners’ Choice Award for being among the top 10 North County San Diego outdoor dining restaurants among other accolades.

California flavor meets coastal elegance at this lovely eatery that’s even preferred and recommended by the locals. The food, service, ambiance and views serve up the perfect dining experience. Guests can select indoor or outdoor seating with the Pacific Ocean offering a breathtaking backdrop.

Chandler’s is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner, daily happy hour and weekend brunch.

My hands-down favorite breakfast item is the French Toast, a Sadie Rose challah bread in a vanilla custard wash with bananas, walnuts, maple syrup and powdered sugar. You’ll probably be able to skip lunch – this entrée is fabulous!

Chandler’s dinner menu isn’t expansive, but it’s well-thought-out with enough choices to please everyone. Being a seafood lover, the Ginger Glazed Salmon was a perfect choice for me. My hubby selected the Spice Crusted Seared Ahi, and both entrees were definite palate pleasures.

Save room for dessert as the Ecuadorian Chocolate Hazelnut Crunch Cake is an ideal share.

Though Cape Rey is a Hilton property, it has a distinctive boutique feel with lots of local flair. You can’t beat the location, friendly staff, incredible food, accommodations and resort amenities. It’s a place deserving return visits.
