If you visit a place repeatedly, you’ve likely stayed in multiple hotels and developed favorites. Some I like for their romantic vibe, while others I prefer for their location. On my last visit to Bellingham, Washington, I added SpringHill Suites by Marriott to my list of favorites.
It may sound silly, but for a chain hotel, I fell in love with their unique color-soaked, playful style. Think curvaceous, dark raspberry sofas and boxy lime green chairs; light fixtures that resemble a cluster of floaty bubbles; and purple lights, along with framed, mischievous vintage photos at the bar. That’s just the lobby. Rooms are colorful, too.
Adding to my delight were the suites’ spaciousness, comfort and functionality, plus an impressive complimentary breakfast, and a range of useful amenities.
The Rooms at SpringHill Suites Bellingham
The all-suite hotel offers king or double queen accommodations, and every room features a sofa bed, microwave, mini refrigerator, flat-screen TV, and coffeemaker. It also boasts a well-equipped desk, complete with an ergonomic chair, a task light and plug-ins. I especially liked the frosted, translucent divider that separates the “living room” areas with the couch and desk from the bedroom.
I was traveling solo, but families will appreciate two bathrooms, one with a shower, vanity and sink, and the other with a sink and toilet. The bathrooms are stocked with lavender- and eucalyptus-scented toiletries from Alice + Co. Botanicals, a brand exclusive to Marriott.
The king bed proved extremely comfortable, not too hard nor too soft. I found an extra blanket in the wardrobe, a thoughtful addition most hotels don’t provide unless you ask. The wardrobe also included an ironing board and an iron. Reading lights on adjustable necks made reading in bed easy.
I notice the little things in hotels. Two details I appreciated in my room at SpringHill Suites were a hook for hanging up a coat or purse just inside the door (so convenient) and a deadbolt that locks automatically when the door closes. Instead of a chain, the door can also be secured with a privacy latch that swings out to prevent it from being opened more than an inch or two.

The hotel boasted several amenities I don’t usually see in hotels, such as dry cleaning. I appreciated the 24-hour staffed front desk, laundry, and secure parking. The hotel features plenty of other useful amenities:

Dining and Drinking at SpringHill Suites
Chuckanut Lobby Bar
Starting at happy hour, the lobby doubles as a place to sip a cocktail or a beer, grab a bite to eat, hang out and socialize. The Chuckanut Lobby Bar offers a full bar and a limited menu of appetizers, burgers, flatbreads, salads, tacos, and more. I made a tasty dinner from the nachos with chicken and a mocktail after a long day of exploring Bellingham.
Complimentary Breakfast
SpringHill offers one of the most extensive complimentary breakfast spreads I’ve seen in this price range. In addition to the usual cereal, bagels, and muffins, guests can choose from warm mini quiche, breakfast sandwiches, hard-boiled eggs, bacon, sausage, flavored yogurt, and other items. The hotel also offers plain yogurt, plain oatmeal, and six cereals — plus more than half a dozen toppings, such as pumpkin seeds, chocolate chips, coconut flakes and granola.
Most impressive were the gluten-free options, including a warm chocolate muffin, available upon request.
Location
The hotel is only three miles from downtown Bellingham where you’ll find museums, shopping and restaurants. If you’ve forgotten something, a Fred Meyer store is only half a mile away.
If you’re flying, SpringHill Suites in Bellingham is only two miles from Bellingham International Airport. The hotel doesn’t offer an airport shuttle, but ride shares are available. If you’re driving, the hotel is located 90 miles north of Seattle.
Pro tip: Take a ride share to downtown Bellingham, especially if you’re going to the Historic Fairhaven District. Both are walkable neighborhoods (though hilly), and parking can be a challenge.
Final Thoughts
With its colorful and spacious rooms, bountiful breakfast, fun lobby bar and convenient location, SpringHill Suites makes a great base for exploring Bellingham. Add useful amenities, such as laundry facilities and an indoor pool, and it may join your list of favorite places to stay, too.
