Driving through the country roads of Sonoma County in Northern California feels like a world away from a busier California lifestyle. It’s an ideal destination for anyone who loves to get in the car and lose themselves, especially if you love rolling hills artfully dotted with vineyards and farmlands.
On a spring afternoon, I was greeted by golden wild mustard grass and vineyards, providing a feast for the eyes. Sonoma Coast Villa Resort & Spa in Bodega is a rustic sanctuary amid this well-appreciated tranquility.
The resort is a boutique-style property with 18 suites, giving the California landscape a Tuscan vibe. The 60-acre property offers understated luxury, representing its proximity to coastal Bodega Bay and its bounty throughout the pastoral region.
“I love my job!” general manager Kendra Wester told me.
“I certainly see why!” I responded.
During our stroll on the grounds to visit livestock near the resort, I said that I loved the property because of its simple elegance, unpretentiousness, inviting atmosphere and a reflection of the laid-back area.
Sonoma County has options closer to bars, restaurants and shopping. Sonoma Coast Villa, however, provides an intimate setting, hidden on the outskirts of the Russian River Valley. This is a place you’ll want to be. With large cozy beds, a fireplace, bathtubs begging for a bubble bath and private patios to enjoy the beautiful natural landscape, sign me up, please.
Though it’s called a “resort,” Sonoma Coast Villa Resort & Spa does not exude a massive or crowded resort feel. Country Mediterranean charm came to mind when I walked around the property and visited the various room options. I’ve stayed in villas in Tuscany and especially loved it when the natural environment and surroundings were showcased. Sonoma Coast Villa Resort & Spa captures those very elements.
Sonoma County Resort Accommodations

Every room offers a king bed and a wood-burning fireplace. Most include a large, jetted soaking tub and separate shower, except for the Hillside rooms that offer a soaking tub/shower combo and a private outdoor deck with plenty of space to enjoy the sounds of nature.
Most accommodations also include a small refrigerator, a K-Cup coffee maker and a wine opener with glasses. They make it easy to enjoy the new wine you purchased after a day of tasting in Sonoma County.
The Poolside King rooms are sizeable, steps from the small pool and gardens.
The Poolside Suite offers a sitting area with a couch and an eat-in breakfast area. The woodsy decor feels like you’re bringing the outside in.
My preference is the Premium Villa King. These units have a closed-door patio with a small courtyard. I pictured having a nice bottle of Pinot and a charcuterie board of artisanal cheeses and salami found locally. However, you could enjoy these anywhere on this gorgeous property.
Families may consider choosing the Poolside Double room with one king bed and one double with a seating area.
For large parties of eight to 10, the Grand Residence is a gorgeous private property on site. It consists of four bedrooms, sleeping up to 10 guests, a full kitchen, a pool table and can accommodate a dining table seating for 14. This would be great for a family reunion, small wedding party or retreat.
This property does have a daily resort fee. Please read all additional costs and inclusions with these fees.
I love it when a property provides opportunities to hide out. The rooms with private patios are already great, but additional private sitting areas exist throughout the resort.
From the main lobby, a spiral staircase leads to a small library with a 360-degree view. This is a great spot to grab a book and enjoy the natural light, work on a puzzle or play the games provided by the resort.
The Carriage House offers spa services but does not have a menu of spa services per se. Rather, it provides custom massage services for singles or couples.
A lovely, welcoming indoor jacuzzi room is located next to the pool.
Dining Options
Continental breakfast is included in the say. The resort doesn’t serve dinner but offers plenty of dinner recommendations. Hazel in Occidental was highly recommended (about 10 miles south of the property). Closer to “home” is the charming town of Valley Ford (about 2.5 miles away).
I enjoyed lunch at Estero’s Cafe, which serves locally sourced dishes for breakfast and lunch. Rocker’s Roadhouse has Tomales Bay oysters and Southern-style cooking. For dinner, consider checking out Dinucci’s Restaurant & Bar, which has been serving family-style Italian dinners since 1968.
Dining/Day Trips
If you’re an oyster lover like my husband and me, you’re lucky, as locals have enjoyed fresh oysters from this area for over a hundred years. If you want them straight from the farm, Tomales Bay Oyster Company will set you up with fresh oysters for takeout. My husband and I love to shuck our own and enjoy them with fresh sourdough bread and red wine, which works for us.
If, however, you prefer someone else do the shucking, the Hog Island Oyster Company serves up raw, BBQed and grilled oysters, along with side options. Add a glass of local wine or beer, and you have quite a meal.
This is also a great time to also check out beautiful Bodega Bay. Only six miles to the coast from the Sonoma Coast Villa, Bodega Bay has restaurants with stunning water views and incredible food options. Bodega Bay is a seafood lover’s dream, from enjoying lobster rolls to fine dining experiences.
Note: If you dine away from the property for dinner, be mindful of driving through the country at night. Some city people aren’t used to that.
Pet-Friendly
Those who travel with their dog as much as my husband and I do will appreciate that every room is pet-friendly, unlike many properties that have designated rooms. This might send a shiver down the spine for those who do not like pet-friendly hotels. But no need to worry here, as the grounds were impeccably clean, and the rooms spotless.
The villas I saw did not have carpet, which is a massive plus when traveling with a dog. A lack of carpet makes for easy cleanup for owners and hotel staff. Though my perfect little pup has never made a mess, a pet waste station is provided.
Additional pet fee: $50 per stay, up to two dogs. If you are planning to visit with an emotional support dog, make sure to check out the local ESA laws, as hotels are generally not required to waive pet fees for emotional support animals. (Check current additional costs, as fees are subject to change.)
Activities

I love a place that encourages visitors to be as active or inactive as they want. Guests can enjoy an outdoor movie night by the fire pit, with fixings to make S’mores. Kendra told me The Birds is a fan favorite since Alfred Hitchcock filmed it just up the road in Bodega Bay.
A Bacci ball court and a small, netted court for activities like pickleball, horseshoe, corn hole and others are on site.
Before Hitchcock chose this location as a backdrop for The Birds, Bodega and Bodega Bay were initially inhabited by the coastal Pomo, Miwok and Kashaya people. Skilled hunters and fishermen enjoyed the abundance of such a fertile area until word got out how much abundance could be found. These are the same areas now producing award-winning wines.
To name a few, various industries such as the fur trade, shipping and lumber, threatened the rich yet delicate ecosystem. The name Bodega comes from Juan de la Bodega y Quadra, a Spanish explorer who arrived in the area in 1775.
Later in the 19th century, the Russians arrived with the Russian American Company to establish the short-lived Fort Ross, now a historic state park. The Gold Rush, logging and waves of industries left their footprints, but conservation efforts continue to work in tandem with the changing world.
For Wine Lovers
The Sonoma Coast Villa is a great place to retreat to after a day of enjoying award-winning wines. Since Sonoma County is vast, wineries with diverse varietals are plentiful. Extending from the Pacific Ocean to the Mayacamas Mountains, the ocean breeze blowing through the region provides the perfect climate to cultivate 19 American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), making it Northern California’s largest wine producer.
A wine map helps plan your visit, especially if you have a favorite varietal. That said, do as I say, not as I do. I believe in “happy accidents” and have joined wine clubs after following my curiosity. This area is where it’s fun to get lost and see what happens, especially with the endless choices of wineries. Be open-minded and enjoy the beautiful countryside.
Other Day Trips from Sonoma Coast Villa
I was serious when I said Sonoma County is far-reaching. Another reason I love this resort’s location is because it’s a quiet retreat from the endless number of activities in the area.
As noted, Bodega Bay is a small town located minutes from Sonoma Coast Villa Resort. Visit art galleries where you can support local artists and take home images of Bodega Bay and the coast. I’ve enjoyed visiting the gift shops and vintage stores around town.
Santa Rosa and Petaluma offer downtown shopping, restaurants, and wine tasting. Downtown Sonoma is a favorite area of mine to visit. There is no lack of excellent restaurants, including The Girl & the Fig, a longtime local favorite.
Take a Hike
Bodega is a fantastic location for outdoor lovers and those who love hiking. If you visit Bodega and Sonoma County, be sure to get to the coast. This is one of California’s most precious coastal areas. Located on California’s fabled Highway 1, Sonoma Coast State Park has almost 20 miles of trails, offering incredible views of the rocky coastline and natural rock arches.
For those looking for an escape from crowds yet close enough to everything Sonoma County offers, consider staying at the Sonoma Coast Villa Resort & Spa.
This resort provides simple elegance and friendly concierge-level service while allowing the beauty of Bodega and Sonoma County to shine.
