The thermometer read a sizzling 107 °F as my husband and I pulled up to the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort in Tucson.

The luxury desert resort is situated in the foothills of the Sonoran Desert, about 15 minutes west of downtown Tucson. Surrounded by saguaro cacti and adjacent to Tucson Mountain Park, the resort offers a blend of Southwestern luxury, outdoor adventure, and wellness, making it a popular destination for couples, families, golfers, and conference attendees. The best part of the stay is not just its lovely pool, but the lazy river and waterslide.

The stunning resort features 575 spacious guest rooms and suites decorated in warm desert tones. All rooms offer private balconies with views of the Tucson Mountains, city, skyline, golf course, surrounding desert, or in our case, the pools.

We were booked for a city view room, however at check-in, the resort upgraded us to a one-bedroom executive suite overlooking the pool and lazy river with mountain views due to our Marriott Bonvoy rewards status. That status also allowed us a late checkout at the conclusion of our stay.

The suite offered 900 square feet of space with a king bed and separate living/sitting area with a dining table for two and individual climate controls in each area. The marble bathroom was spacious with a walk-in shower and separate toilet room. Soft, luxurious robes and slippers were also provided.

Resort Dining Choices Abound

Starr Pass offers several guest dining options. Signature Grill, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner features Native American and Mexican dishes prepared with farm-fresh produce and custom spices.

Salud, open only for dinner, sports captivating outdoor views as diners enjoy authentic Mexican cuisine, hand-crafted cocktails and fine tequilas while Passagio offers an Italian-inspired dinner menu with seasonal dishes, wines and cocktails.

Creosote Sonoran Kitchen & Cocktails is located at the newly reimagined Club at Starr Pass overlooking the golf course. Lunch here was a delightful experience after our check-in, as the restaurant offers locally inspired Sonoran cuisine with a modern American twist and craft cocktails for lunch and dinner. Starr Pass offers a complimentary shuttle to the picturesque eatery.

Plunge features poolside dining during lunch with appetizers and refreshing drinks, while guests have the option of picking up handcrafted sandwiches, fresh salad, pizza and snacks, along with a selection of coffee, wine and local beer for breakfast and lunch at the JW Market coffee house.

Unique Experiences

We were thrilled to see that one of the signature traditions at the resort has continued over the years. The nightly Tequila Toast is a complimentary sunset gathering that celebrates the culture and flavors on the Southwest. Guests are invited to the Salud Terrace as staff pour a featured tequila celebrating the “Legend of Arriba Abajo”, a tale linked to Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa. Visitors proclaim “¡Arriba, Abajo, al Centro, al Dentro… Salud!” before downing their tequila shot.

The Mitakuye Morning Ritual is a daily Native American ceremony held at sunrise, with sounds of the Native American flute, burning a sage prayer tie with intentions, and an eagle feather blessing.

Resort Amenities

A huge draw of the resort is the extensive offerings of recreational activities available. Starr Pass sports a three-level outdoor pool complex and a lazy river with innertubes, a waterslide, whirlpool spa and private cabanas. You can bet that in the heat of the summer, we took advantage of these welcoming watery treasures. And what a respite it was.

Golfers can enjoy 27 holes of championship golf designed by legendary golfer Arnold Palmer. The three nine-hole courses —Palmer, Coyote, and Roadrunner—are notable for dramatic elevation changes, desert scenery, and challenging play.

Yoga and Pilates classes are also offered at the resort, along with a 24-hour fitness center that includes cardiovascular and strength equipment. The outdoor patio offers plenty of comfortable seating with a myriad of fire pits.

Full-service Hashani Spa combines the latest beauty and health technology with ancient techniques and traditions inspired by the Indigenous people of the region, using the healing properties of the revered Saguaro cactus, also known as Hashini. New Moon Energy includes a guided meditation while floating in Hashini Spa’s saline lap pool and sipping a Full Moon Brew by Crooked Tooth Brewery.

Sunrise and sunset staff-guided hikes along with a desert stargazing experience are also available for booking. A fireside s’mores experience is popular with both little and big kids alike.

For those wanting to just park their car and not have to worry about finding downtown Tucson parking, shuttle service is available at no cost to guests heading to the Mercado District.

Final Thoughts on the Resort Experience

A stay at JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort is more than just a getaway—it’s an opportunity to experience the beauty of the Sonoran Desert while enjoying exceptional comfort, hospitality, and adventure. From breathtaking mountain views and relaxing spa treatments to championship golf, scenic hiking trails, and unforgettable sunsets, every moment is designed to create lasting memories.

Whether coming for a family vacation, a romantic escape, or a peaceful retreat, guests leave JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort with a deeper appreciation for the unique landscape, warm Southwestern charm, and world-class service that make this destination truly special. It’s no wonder travelers choose to return again and again.
