Bahia Principe Hotels and Resorts reopened Bahia Principe Luxury Esmeralda in December of 2023 after an eight month, $35 million renovation. Located in the renowned beachfront destination of Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, the newly reimagined property draws inspiration from the indigenous people of the Caribbean, the Taíno, delivering a revitalized and culturally immersive experience to its guests. Embracing the ‘Taíno Soul’ concept, guests can enjoy new culinary offerings, upscale amenities, and new room categories.

Cultural Transformation
The ‘Taino Soul’ concept is weaved throughout the renovated all-inclusive property. Notably, the resort’s grounds feature a distinctive tribute to the traditional Taíno sport of “batú.” This ancient game, played within a rectangular space enclosed by rocks, is reimagined through the incorporation of stone elements and rugged textures, enriching the design with historical significance.
Within this thoughtful design, the lobby and buffet areas serve as a symbolic representation of the home of the cacique (referring to the local leader of an indigenous group). The living and entertainment spaces are designed for the nitaínos, the nobility and warriors, while the outdoor areas and theater are dedicated to the culture, embodying the spirit of the bohiques, who held the roles of priests and healers. The restaurants give nod to the naborías, who were skilled fishermen, farmers, and artisans.
In addition, the natural landscape, abundant flora, and vibrant fauna are all embraced and seamlessly integrated into the overall experience. In a first for the Bahia Principe brand, the resort proudly introduces two themed specialty restaurants: Taino Restaurant and Mongolian Restaurant. These additions offer a diverse range of delectable dining options, catering to varied palates.

“Matum”
Bahia Principe Luxury Esmeralda presents an exclusive show, “Matum,” as part of its new cultural emphasis. The new, 53-minute production is inspired by the Taíno and introduces guests in the mystical ambiance of ancient rituals. The show features nearly two dozen live performers and is presented every Wednesday.
More than a performance, this standout collaboration between local Dominican talent and Bahia Principe’s art and entertainment team, was designed to offer guests a unique experience and opportunity to learn.
Special trips to cocoa, sugar, and coffee farms can be arranged, as well as ATV excursions and trips to Stingray Bay.
