The Liberty Trust Hotel is located in the heart of downtown Roanoke and occupies a building that has been meticulously restored to preserve its original architectural features. Liberty Trust History
One of the hotel’s most intriguing aspects is its history as a former bank. When it opened in 1910, the Liberty Trust building was the historic First National Bank headquarters. At the time, it introduced the latest technological improvements in plumbing and heating and was the most advanced fireproof structure in Roanoke.
It incorporated the newly invented electric elevator as a key element in the multi-story building’s design. Those original elevator cars are still used in Liberty Trust today. Daily mail is still picked up from a vintage mail drop box on the ground floor.
The Liberty Trust building is regarded as the most well-preserved and appointed Edwardian-era bank building in Virginia and is proudly featured on the National Register of Historic Places.

Attention to detail is evident in every aspect of the room, from the carefully selected custom-made furnishings to thoughtful touches like premium toiletries and complimentary bottled water.

When I stepped into the Liberty Trust Hotel, I was captivated by its historic charm and luxurious lobby. From the exquisite copper doors in the hotel foyer to the magnificent floor-to-ceiling columns, soaring ceilings and marble-filled lobby, the building’s impressive architectural design is evident in every corner of the property.
Two of the original bank vaults remain intact, and one located prominently at the far end of the lobby has been ingeniously repurposed as a high-end wine-tasting room. This provides guests with a truly unique experience and is a testament to the hotel’s innovative use of space and history. The vault’s heavy door and intricate locking mechanism add an element of intrigue and nostalgia, transporting guests back to a bygone era.
To be honest, I was a bit hesitant to walk in the vault alone for fear the door would close, but really, what better place to enjoy a refreshing libation?
The Liberty Trust Hotel’s interior and exterior feature a peculiar flower emblem. The emblem is part of Liberty Trust’s branding initiative to highlight the building’s French Renaissance architecture and Beaux-Arts design influence.
Dining Experience
The Vault at The Liberty Trust Hotel is an on-site restaurant and bar and dining there is a culinary delight. The restaurant offers an eclectic menu and showcases the best of local and seasonal ingredients in its authentic global recipes. During my stay, I had the pleasure of enjoying a meal of expertly prepared dishes paired with a specialty cocktail. The restaurant’s elegant atmosphere elevated the overall dining experience to a new level.
Meeting and Event Space
While I did not personally use the meeting and event space during my stay, I had the opportunity to tour the facilities. The spaces are well-equipped and versatile, making them suitable for various occasions, from business meetings to social gatherings. The combination of historic charm and modern amenities creates a unique and inviting atmosphere for any event.
