“Look! Look!”

Excited voices rippled through Barefoot’s Beachside Bar & Grill as diners pointed toward the surf. Three dolphins arced gracefully above the waves, surrounding a lone paddleboarder in what seemed a once-in-a-lifetime moment.

From my seat on the 20,000-square-foot wooden deck, basking in the warmth of the Florida sun, and savoring fresh Mahi tacos, I watched the scene unfold against the dazzling backdrop of the Emerald Coast. The moment felt idyllic, cementing the reason generations of families return to Hilton Sandestin year after year—and now I understand why. It’s the kind of place that pulls you back, time and again.

The Hilton Sandestin story began in 1984 with the opening of 400 beachfront condominiums. In 1998, a second tower was added, bringing more guest rooms and expanded amenities, including a pool, beach deck, and signature steakhouse. Now, after celebrating its 40th anniversary, the resort has completed a $35 million, property-wide renovation—enhancing the luxury it’s known for and adding new features like a state-of-the-art indoor pool.

From the moment guests arrive, they’re treated like VIPs as porters stand ready to whisk luggage straight to the room. Mine, on the ninth floor, was a serene retreat of crisp whites and calming tones. I stepped out onto the balcony to take it all in: children laughing in the pool below, the sugar-white sand stretching toward the horizon, bright yellow umbrellas adding cheerful pops of color.

I could already picture slow, quiet mornings here, coffee in hand and a good book in my lap.

With 590 guest rooms, the hotel spreads across the Emerald and Spa Towers. Guests can choose between first-floor patios or upper-level balconies with a partial or full view of the Gulf. My ninth-floor balcony, complete with a table and chairs, was the perfect perch for my second dolphin sighting.

Inside, the spacious premium beachfront room was thoughtfully designed for families, featuring a cozy front alcove with bunk beds. The main bedroom opened up to reveal a king bed, a vibrant coral sofa and a dining table with chairs. The mattress struck the perfect balance of softness and support and I slept better than I had in years. With ample storage and space to settle in, the room felt like a true retreat.

Relaxation comes easily at the Hilton Sandestin Resort. I highly recommend renting a beach chair and umbrella—perfectly positioned just a few steps from the Sand Bar for easy access to drinks and snacks. The resort shines in the small details, from complimentary beach towels to an insulated souvenir jug that, once purchased, offers free water and soda refills for life.

When you’re ready for more activity, jump into a lively game of beach volleyball or grab a complimentary kayak to explore the coastline. A peaceful stroll along the shore leads to Topsail Hill Preserve State Park, where you might spot local wildlife in a quieter, more natural setting. To end your beach day on a magical note, reserve a sunset campfire complete with S’mores—an unforgettable way to soak in the final golden light.

The Food and Drink

Dining options range from super casual—like Picnix Poolside Market and Barefoot’s Beachside Bar & Grill—to semi-formal Hadashi Sushi Bar and all the way to upscale at Seagar’s Prime Steaks & Seafood.

After a morning on the beach, nothing hits the spot like a sub sandwich and an ice cream cone from Picnix. For a laid-back meal with a view, head to Barefoot’s Beachside Bar & Grill, where you’ll find delicious bites and refreshing blended drinks served right on the deck. I recommend the Firecracker Shrimp Wrap or the toasted chicken quesadilla, paired with a Watermelon Frosé or Boozy Cherry Limeade. I lean toward fruity drinks, but others in my travel group raved about the classic margaritas and the solid beer selection.

Dinner at Seagar’s was quite an experience. This restaurant exudes classic elegance with its crisp white tablecloths, rich wood accents and striking cobalt blue glassware. The sophisticated ambiance is enhanced by a dramatic wine wall, soft lighting and intimate candlelit tables, creating a refined yet inviting atmosphere. The experience is elevated by ordering one of the dishes prepared tableside, whether it’s a classic, crisp Caesar salad or the intensely sweet, show-stopping Bananas Foster.

The Spa

Arriving early to the Serenity by the sea Spa is all part of the experience. I began unwinding in the soothing whirlpool, while others explored the steam rooms and saunas. As appointment times neared, we gathered in the tranquil lounge, wrapped in plush robes, sipping chilled water and testing out the zero-gravity chairs.

I opted for a deep tissue massage—ideal for seasoned spa-goers—while other guests chose relaxing massages, rejuvenating facials and indulgent body treatments. The red light therapy session, in particular, earned glowing reviews from everyone who tried it.

Around Town

You could easily spend an entire day exploring the Village of Baytowne Wharf, a half-mile shuttle ride from the Hilton Sandestin. Stroll through charming boutiques offering coastal-inspired jewelry, local art and vibrant children’s clothing, or relax with a dockside drink as boats drift by.

There’s no shortage of fun for kids, either. Little ones will love the Adventure Playground, riding the Baytowne Carousel, and feeding colorful koi for just a quarter. Older kids can challenge their minds at Cloak and Dagger Escape Room or get their adrenaline pumping with the zipline and ropes course at Baytowne Adventure Zone.

While the complimentary shuttles don’t run to Silver Sands Premium Outlets, I easily caught a Lyft to grab some makeup essentials I forgot—oops!—and squeeze in a little bonus shopping. The outlet mall also has a splash pad and kiddie train to keep young shoppers entertained.

I wrapped up my outing with a quintessential Florida experience—a visit to Gator Beach at Fudpucker’s for a souvenir photo with a baby alligator. A little nervous, I asked the friendly attendant if the one-year-olds actually liked being held. He explained that, as cold-blooded animals, they’re drawn to our body heat. Sure enough, the little gator nestled in—and even gave me what looked suspiciously like a smirk. I stuck around for the hourly interactive show, where I learned fun facts about Florida’s famous reptiles and watched the larger gators snap up fish with lightning speed.

Plan to stay at in Sandestin at least four days to fully experience the resort amenities and explore the town. There’s no need to rent a car, as the hotel can arrange transportation from the airport. There’s plenty to do within shuttle distance, and if you want to go further afield, both Lyft and Uber provide prompt service to the resort.
