We have many choices and places to vacation in the U.S. Sometimes, the country can seem so big and overwhelming that we find ourselves in need of slowing it down a bit and connecting with our heritage and favorite European destinations without having to cross an ocean. For me personally, some of these places are much better than a therapy session!

If you’re looking for a getaway that’s all about a fairy-tale feel with unique splendor and charm, I have some suggestions from coastal towns to small villages invoking a sense of magic and nostalgia. I’ve added some suggestions for vacation rentals that set the stage for an enchanting experience.

Carmel by the Sea, California

One of the most beautiful collaborations between man and nature has to be the seaside bohemian village of Carmel-by-the-Sea – a favorite getaway for my husband and me.

What began as an artist colony that lured the likes of Sinclair Lewis, Robert Louis Stevenson and Ansel Adams with incredible scenic beauty, the quaint collection of whimsical thatched-roof cottages, cape-cod homes, artsy boutiques and storybook restaurants give Carmel a distinctive flavor unlike any other West Coast town.

Storybook Cottage Downtown Carmel

If there ever was a classic storybook cottage, this is it. Built in 1928, the cozy, old world, one bedroom home is the real fairy tale. The house features one queen bed upstairs with windows that open to fresh Pacific breezes and an ocean peek view.

 Fairytale Comstock Cottage

This original Cotswold Tudor is an absolute gem. The two-bedroom, one-bath cottage is in a quiet location with a private garden yet just steps to the beach and the shops and restaurants of downtown Carmel.

You’ll find plenty of charm and old-world ambience reflecting a French countryside home in this gorgeous 1925 two-bedroom, two-bath cottage. Guests will be welcomed by a turreted entrance, fountains, European style gardens and a luxury property that exudes a true European ambience.

Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts

This charming town located on Martha’s Vineyard is known for its picturesque landscapes, beautiful beaches and colorful Victorian gingerbread cottages dating back to the 19th century. Think Hansel and Gretel!

Oak Bluffs is also home to the oldest functioning carousel in the U.S. built in 1876.

1870 Cozy Beach Cottage

A newly refurbished Cottage City Victorian adorable beach house is in an ideal location to explore the town and the island. Two bedrooms are located up a narrow flight of stairs, one with a queen bed, the other with a single twin.

Quaint, Quiet and Romantic

Nestled in a quiet neighborhood of Oak Bluffs, this endearing vacation home can easily accommodate four guests with a king-size futon on the ground level and a king-sized sleeping loft accessible by a ladder.

Vintage Cape Cod Cottage

If you’re traveling with friends or family, this five-bedroom Victorian gingerbread abode is only two blocks from town and the beaches. The well-appointed historic cottage has a fireplace, a large eat-in kitchen and an outdoor shower.
