Surrounded by farmland and only five miles from the Canadian border, Lynden, Washington, is known for its farm-to-table food trails, cool climate, and laid-back atmosphere. The Cobblestone Hotel and Suites is ideally situated for a weekend getaway from Seattle or a stop on a road trip. Once there, guests can explore the area with daytrips to farm stands and local producers, as well as attractions and museums in Vancouver, B.C., and Bellingham, Washington.
I discovered the magic of Lynden after spending three days sailing. Ready for a hot shower, excellent WiFi, and an easy meal, I checked into the Cobblestone Hotel and Suites. It delivered all that I needed, and more. The Cobblestone Hotel became my home base for exploring the area.
Convenient Location
Location is one of the first things I look for in a hotel. The second thing I look for is a coffee shop, because in my family, sufficiently strong coffee is essential to happy travel. A Woods Coffee shop is only a hundred yards or so from the hotel. A taproom and bistro are equally close. In less than half a mile, I also found a grocery store, pharmacy, fast food, and several restaurants.
The Cobblestone Hotel’s central location made it easy to go exploring. Historic downtown Lynden is approximately two miles to the east. Parking was free and plentiful, so I spent a morning walking and checking out the local shops, such as the Lynden Dutch Bakery. The town shows its pride in its Dutch heritage with windmills all over Front Street. I also enjoyed the room-sized displays about the town’s past at the Lynden Heritage Museum.
Vancouver, B.C. is 45 miles north of the hotel, making it an easy day trip. I didn’t cross the border on this trip because I headed south to Bellingham instead. Downtown and the historic Fairhaven neighborhood are only 15 miles from the hotel. Some of my favorite activities included whale watching for orcas with San Juan Cruises, playing with the Mega Zapper at the Spark Museum of Electrical Invention, and strolling the boardwalk on the bay.
Cobblestone Hotel Rooms
Like the common areas, the hotel rooms feature soft earth tones and modern, unfussy wood furnishings. The Cobblestone Hotel offers various room configurations to accommodate travelers from couples to families of six.
At 348-square-feet, my king studio provided more than enough space for all my luggage. A sitting area with a low sofa (a pull-out sleeper), coffee table, and large flat screen TV provided the perfect place for dinner in my room. The area is divided by a wall from the bedroom.
The bed proved extremely comfortable, and after watching a mystery on a second large flat screen TV, I picked out the perfect pillow from the four on the bed. An information card explained that of the four pillows, the back row offered firm ones and the front row offered softer options. My achy neck really appreciated the options.
All rooms feature a coffeemaker, microwave, and refrigerator, perfect for making use of leftovers or the frozen entrees downstairs in the tiny convenience store by the lobby. The bedroom also features a desk/workstation and a dresser. The hotel provided lightly scented toiletries by Gilchrist and Soames of London in the shower. Travelers with pets will appreciate the dog-friendly rooms at a $25 fee per night.
Cobblestone Hotel Amenities
The hotel features a host of amenities that anticipate and meet travelers’ needs. One of the most important was free self-serve Starbucks coffee, tea, and cocoa available at all hours.
Next door to the coffee station is the convenience shop, a well-stocked pantry with more than the usual drinks and candy. In addition to often-forgotten items, such as toothbrushes and allergy medications, the hotel stocks ice cream, frozen entrees, and frozen pizza. What impressed me the most? The hotel also provides small pizza pans, a pizza oven, pizza cutters, and napkins.
The complimentary breakfast is presented in a portion of the on-site restaurant. In addition to cereals, yogurt, and bagels, the breakfast also featured a make-your-own waffles and ingredients for a scrambled egg and sausage wrap or sandwich.
Additional amenities include free parking and WiFi, self-serve guest laundry, indoor swimming pool, fitness center, and a business center (perfect for when you need to print something).
Cobblestone Hotel’s Restaurant
Wissota Chophouse, the on-site bar and steakhouse, offers dinner and drinks in a cozy, Northwest-inspired space. On a summer night, the best tables are on the patio and around the fire pit.
The menu features primarily steaks and seafood, but it also offers pasta and a long list of à la carte sides and starters. I couldn’t resist the savory steak flatbread drizzled with a sweet balsamic glaze. The shareables menu includes crab cakes, fig & honey fried goat cheese, buffalo fried alligator, bone marrow, and more.
Cobblestone Hotel and Suites made my stay in Lynden easy and comfortable. Conveniently located near Bellingham and Vancouver, B.C., the hotel served as an excellent base for exploring the region’s farms, museums, and other attractions.
