Topping many bucket lists, Phuket on Thailand’s lower west coast continues to captivate. Renowned for its world-class beaches and azure waters, it boasts an exquisite blend of natural beauty, compelling attractions, a fun holiday vibe, and accommodations fitting any budget. Its international airport makes it easily accessible from most home ports.

Residing in Thailand for over eight years, a trip to Phuket for my wife and me is about seeing changes, making new discoveries, and revisiting favorites. One new discovery was the award-winning Wyndham Grand Phuket Kalim Bay Resort, our home base for this trip.

Perched high on a hillside overlooking the 2-mile-wide Patong Bay, Phuket’s liveliest beach and entertainment zone, Patong is evident in the distance.  The bay is a buzz of activity, and the panoramic heights of Wyndham Grand provide a front-row seat.

During our stay, international cruise ships came for day visits and mega yachts jostled for prime middle-of-the-bay positions before dropping anchor. Flotillas of jet skis scooted in and around the vast bay while traditional long-tail boats hugged the rocky coastline, going about their daily routines.

Positioned centrally on Phuket’s west (sunset) coast, most of the island’s attractions and famous beaches are easily accessible. However, staying in is almost irresistible as most of Wyndham Grand Kalim Bay’s 194 rooms and suites have their own plunge pool and mesmerizing ocean views.

Our top-floor Ocean-view Pool Villa at an expansive 1291-square-feet presented commanding Andaman Sea vistas from every aspect. The split-level bedroom and lounge area with floor-to-ceiling windows led onto our private deck with sun lounges and direct pool access.

The spacious, gleaming white-with-light-wood-finish bathroom included dual vanities, a glassed shower enclosure, and a separate bathtub. It also had direct access to our Villa’s plunge pool, which meant no wet feet or dripping bodies walking through the room.

Recognized as the Best Romantic Hotel in Asia in the international Haute Grandeur Global Hotel Awards 2023, this romantic theme plays out in many ways, from a flower-filled bath to the welcome message in rose petals on your bed. Floating breakfast, lunch or dinners are served directly to your villa pool in a specially designed heart-shaped tray, giving room service a new intimacy.

Guests can even reaffirm their love by presenting their partner with a hotel-provided heart-shaped padlock at a sunset love ceremony at Infiniti Bar.

Zana Spa, overlooking the main resort pool, offers an enchanting selection of rejuvenating spa experiences, like therapeutic massages, Thai herbal compress treatments and soothing body rituals. Steam and sauna facilities are also available.

We chose the signature Vichy Shower, inspired by mineral springs in Vichy, France. The treatment starts with a whole-body scrub followed by an invigorating waterfall massage from six adjustable shower jets. Simply amazing.

The spa is located immediately underneath the resort’s modern gym. Directly adjacent, Thabtim Café offers healthy juice drinks, snacks, and refreshing beverages for those hanging out at the pool.

Perched atop one of the accommodation buildings is the resort’s second pool, The Deck, with its infinity edge and uninterrupted Patong Bay seascape. Gourmet snacks or local Thai dishes complement the crafted cocktails, and a distinct party vibe is in the air.

Infiniti Lobby Bar is a covered deck on the hillside with the most enthralling Andaman Sea outlooks. This is THE place for sunsets while sipping one of the mixologist’s curated cocktails or refreshing libations as you wait for Mother Nature to put on her daily sky show. To get even more out of the experience, sign up for Infiniti’s cocktail-making class, as we did. Very much hands-on, barkeep ‘Ton’ had me crafting a never-tried-before Mango Mojito in no time, providing bar skills tips as we went.

Taking its name from Phuket’s location at 98th Meridian East, Latitude 98 Restaurant is the resort’s all-day dining venue. Glass floor-to-ceiling walls enclose this expansive dining zone with entrancing ocean panoramas from every table.

Breakfast is a bountiful buffet offering a multitude of Western and Asian favorites and specialties. A la carte lunch and dinner menus provide Thai-infused cuisine with an international twist. For the best outlook, Latitude 98’s wide alfresco dining deck is the ultimate for tropical outdoor dining, especially for an evening under the stars. Staff will readily create a romantic dining nook for you with fairy lights and candles.

Assisting with Wyndham Grand Kalim Bay’s sustainability goals is the on-site orchard. Staff will happily take guests on a tour here. The substantial and highly productive space sits on the hills behind the resort. A visit is an eye-opening education in tropical and Asian-specific herbs, spices, vegetables and fruits. Many are used within the resort’s bars, kitchens, and Thai cooking classes. I have never seen so many varieties of papaya, even though I have grown my own at our Thai home.

The resort has a daily shuttle bus working according to a schedule, taking guests to and from Patong Beach. If you wish to travel to Phuket’s other beaches or specific locations, taxis can be arranged through reception.

A dedicated Tour Desk can also assist with booking tours on the island and to Phuket’s famous neighboring islands. The choices could feel overwhelming, so research before your trip.

Kamala Beach

Just three miles north of Wyndham Grand is one of my favorite beaches, the five-mile-long Kamala Beach. Casuarinas and coconut trees line the decidedly languid, soft sandy beach, and it offers many tempting beach cafés and restaurants, from casual Thai to upmarket, along with a selection of simple shopping options.

Direct beach access is at the southern end, while the northern and central areas are the most attractive.

Phuket Old Town

Lively Phuket Old Town is 10 miles across the island and a great place to uncover the island’s history. Marvel at the pastel-toned, century-old Sino-Portuguese townhouses, particularly the well-preserved rows of shophouses along Soi Rommanee, Phuket’s original red-light district and lanes branching off Thalang Road.

Explore the grand historical buildings now featuring renowned restaurants and museums. Discover cute boutiques, captivating galleries, cool cafes, and inviting bars. Sunday evening, the Walking Street Market, which has entertainment and stalls full of tempting street food, drinks, and arty knickknacks, is a must.

How to get to Wyndham Grand Phuket Kalim Bay Resort

Phuket International Airport is less than an hour’s drive north of the resort, and taxis are readily available once you depart the arrivals hall. Alternatively, talk to Wyndham Grand Kalim Bay to see what other transfer arrangements they might offer.

Wyndham Grand Phuket Kalim Bay Resort is also part of Wyndham Destinations, and Wyndham Vacation Club member benefits apply. A dedicated Club Wyndham information center is on-site, and the resort also has a selection of dedicated Club guest rooms well suited for extended stays.
