When people plan trips to Ontario and Quebec, stopping in Toronto is usually at the top of the list… or a few days in Montreal and Quebec City. Many bypass Ottawa because they think it’s a boring city full of government buildings.

Those who visit, however, like I did, will be pleasantly surprised to find that Ottawa is a vibrant city with a fascinating history, fun attractions, and an interesting foodie scene. The Alt Hotel is the ideal place to stay and experience it all.

Alt Hotel Ottawa Rooms

The Alt Hotel has 148 bright, airy, modern rooms with one or two queen-sized beds. The first thing I noticed when walking into my room was a Canadian $10 bill on the wall. This is the first time I’ve seen oversized currency used as wall decorations.

Beds are furnished with Egyptian cotton linen and cozy goose-down pillows and comforters.  Hypoallergenic bedding is available per request.

Bathrooms are spacious and include a rainfall shower, makeup mirror and premium, hand-crafted bath products made with natural ingredients and pure essential oils.

Room amenities include a spacious desk with an ergonomic chair, free high-speed Wi-Fi, and a Nespresso coffee machine. An HD TV with Chromecast lets you enjoy your favorite shows and entertainment away from home.

Other amenities, such as electric kettles, small refrigerators, bathrobes and slippers, are available upon request.

The hotel is pet friendly and while Fido and Fluffy are welcome to stay in your room, you must note that you plan to bring a pet when making your reservation. The Alt Hotel provides amenities to keep them happy, such as pet beds, water and food bowls, treats, toys and leashes.

Relaxing Public Spaces

The main lobby is the perfect place for relaxing, working, and socializing. The lobby wall is covered with photos of past guests from around the world who’ve posted comments about their stay. In addition to a comfortable sitting area, there’s a café and lounge with a well-stocked bar.

The Happy Goat Café offers a variety of freshly roasted coffees, teas, and breakfast items, such as Greek yogurt with granola and a bacon, egg and cheddar breakfast sandwich. If you stop in for lunch, try the chicken or veggie crunch wrap or the BLT panini.

There’s always a crowd around the bar at Altcetera Lounge. Guests and locals enjoy beer, wine and a variety of cocktails while catching up on the news, watching hockey, or playing a round of pool.

The Altcetera Lounge offers snacks and a few chicken, beef and pasta dishes for those who want something a bit heartier.

The fitness center is open 24 hours a day and includes an elliptical machine, treadmills, stationary bikes and free weights. Yoga mats are available on request.

The Perfect Place for Exploring Ottawa

One of the biggest advantages the Alt Hotel offers is its location. It’s in the heart of the business district, and many of the city’s popular attractions, restaurants and clubs are within easy walking distance.

Parliament Hill, the Rideau Canal and the National War Memorial are just a few blocks away. Byward Market and the National Gallery of Canada are located about a mile from the hotel. If you don’t want to walk, take the O-Train (metro) to the Rideau Center station. The Parliament O-Train station is around the corner.

The Holocaust and War Museum of Canada are a few miles from downtown. Take the O-Train to the Pimisi station and both are a few blocks away. Uber or Lyft is your best bet if you’re visiting attractions that are further away from town, like the Madahoki Indigenous Farm on the outskirts of Ottawa and the Canadian Museum of History, which is across the river in Gatineau, Quebec.

If you’re looking for a modern, comfortable place to stay that’s close to all the action, you’ll find that the Alt Hotel is the perfect place to call home during your visit to Ottawa. This lovely boutique hotel will meet all your needs.
