When most people think of a vacation, they picture Miami, Disney, Las Vegas, and even far-off destinations like Spain, Costa Rica, or Dubai.

Those places have their appeal. No argument there. But sometimes the best vacations happen in places most people fly right over.

Gulf County, Florida, is a good example.

Of course, visitors come to Florida. The Sunshine State actually welcomed over 41 million visitors in early 2025. Most of those visitors? They went to Orlando or Miami. But why vacation in such crowded spaces when you can visit Gulf County and have the good stuff almost all to yourself?

Need more convincing? Here are great reasons to consider a Gulf County vacation.

St. Joseph Peninsula State Park

Like your beaches quiet? Then you’ll definitely appreciate St. Joseph Peninsula State Park. Also known as T.H. Stone Memorial, St. Joseph boasts miles upon miles of untouched coastline. No high-rises. No loud beach bars. Just sand, water, and the kind of silence you don’t get in those popular crowded resorts.

Parks like this are definitely a big part of why visitor spending in the state hit an impressive $134.9 billion in 2024 alone. People are choosing nature over noise. You should, too.

Here, you can:

  • Walk long stretches without seeing many people
  • Spot wildlife and coastal birds
  • Kayak or fish without competing for space

What makes it even better is how easy it is to stay close. A lot of visitors book into the barrier dunes rentals nearby, which means you’re never more than a short walk from the park. No long drives. No overplanning.

Properties in this area are luxurious, comfortable, and, according to Cape Escape Vacation Rentals. Just the kind of space where you can vacation with every single member of the family.

Cape San Blas Lighthouse

The Cape San Blas Lighthouse is a beautifully preserved landmark in Port St. Joe, Florida.

First built in the 1840s, it’s survived a lot of damage over the years, including the damage caused during the Civil War. It’s been rebuilt multiple times as a result.

It was, in fact, moved from its original location in 2014 to George Core Park to protect it from more damage. Today, it stands as one of the most photographed spots in the county.

And climbing to the top? It makes all those hours of yard work back home feel worth it.

That’s not just marketing copy. The 2025 Gulf County TDC visitor’s guide listed “Climbing the Cape” as one of the top things to do in the area.

It’s also one of those one-of-a-kind places that works for just about everyone. No loud crowds. No chaos. Just space, fresh air, and a moment where you can actually hear yourself think.

St. Joseph Bay State Buffer Preserve Visitor Center

St. Joseph’s is one of the best sites to visit in Gulf County. Everything around here pulls you into a different rhythm, from the thousands of acres of land and water to the bay that’s often described as one of the most pristine in Florida.

What’s wilder about this preserve is the history. Archaeological surveys show that people have been living on these lands since prehistoric times. Some say nearly 12,000 years. Vacation here, and you’re connecting with memories that are thousands of years old.

But the modern atmosphere is no less interesting.

You can:

  • Snorkel in the clear, shallow water
  • See marine life up close and personal
  • Learn about local ecosystems inside the visitor center

But that’s not all. The preserve also has one of the most interesting residents, an alligator. If you’re lucky, you can see one during tours.

William J. “Billy Joe” Rish Recreation Area

Popularly known as Rish Park, and located along Cape San Blas Road, this recreation spot is popular for its pristine sand beaches and turquoise waters. But Rish Park is more than just a pretty shoreline.

The 100-acre park boasts motorized and non-motorized beach wheelchairs, water wheelchairs, and an Olympic-size swimming pool with a wheelchair-accessible ramp. All these make it one of the parks in Florida that’s genuinely handicap-accessible.

Rish Park is one of those rare spots where you and every member of the family can enjoy the outdoors, without the commercial fluff you see in places like Las Vegas or Orlando. Pets aren’t allowed here,  though. So, plan in advance.

Corinne Costin Gibson Memorial Public Library

A library on a vacation list? Sounds odd at first. But this isn’t your typical small-town library. The Corinne Costin Gibson Memorial Public Library is the hub of Port Saint Joe.

Here, you’ll not just find books, magazines, CDs, and DVDs; you’ll also find STEM learning events, storytime programs, and even musical programming.

Named after the late wife of private donor Tom Gibson, who contributed $50,000 in her memory, the library was dedicated in 1977 and has been a cornerstone of Port St. Joe ever since.

In addition to everything mentioned above, Corinne Costin Public Library also provides 3D printing services, genealogy research tools, and meeting rooms. That last one can be a lifesaver if you’re working remotely and need some peace and quiet between beach outings.

It’s a small-town institution done right, and spending time here tells you a lot about what Gulf County actually values.
